Ben Gurion Airport Investigates August 20th Strike Chaos

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) is continuing its investigation into the surprise strike that disrupted operations at Ben Gurion Airport on August 20th, one of the busiest travel days of the year. While final conclusions have not yet been reached, the sequence of events is becoming clearer. On that day, over 100,000 passengers were expected to pass through the airport.

Sources indicate that approximately 35 baggage sorting employees were instructed to stop working. This was not related to overtime or shift changes, as initially suggested, but a direct order to cease operations. This decision led to a halt in check-in services and other processes in the passenger and baggage handling chain, ultimately causing the airport chaos.

According to industry sources, the directive to stop the baggage sorters' work came from Pinchas Idan, the chairman of the IAA Workers' Committee. Following the IAA's internal review, which is still ongoing, a separate investigation ordered by Transportation Minister Miri Regev is expected to take place. This committee will examine the events and draw conclusions.

The findings are crucial not only for understanding the August 20th incident but also for preparing for the upcoming High Holidays, another period expected to see high passenger volumes, with nearly 100,000 travelers daily. Lessons learned from the strike are considered significant for managing the upcoming peak travel season.
