Nepal Landslide Triggered by Ice Collapse Kills Hundreds

A catastrophic landslide in Nepal, near the China border, was caused by a massive 600-meter ice block detaching from a mountain peak and falling over 2,000 meters at speeds of 193 km/h. The collapse, which occurred recently, generated a deadly surge of mud and debris that destroyed everything in its path. The disaster resulted in over 700 deaths and left more than 2,500 people missing in the Seti River region, including several Israelis. Nepalese authorities have not yet assessed the extensive damage to infrastructure and private property.

Scientists believe global warming played a significant role, accelerating the melting of Himalayan glaciers. The increased rate of glacial decay since 2000 has weakened the 'ice glue' holding the mountains together, leading to increased internal pressure and eventual collapse. The event was initially misidentified as an earthquake by seismic sensors.

Researchers are still investigating the exact cause of the unprecedented water surge that accompanied the landslide. While the falling ice block is a known factor, the sheer volume of water suggests that the impact may have ruptured underground water pockets trapped deep within the mountain, revealing a previously unknown hydrological phenomenon. Experts emphasize that developing more sophisticated early warning systems is crucial to prevent future disasters of this magnitude.
