Glacier Collapse in Himalayas Triggers Deadly Floods in Nepal and Tibet

A massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas caused devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet, leaving nearly 2,000 people missing as of Friday. Nepal's National Disaster Management Authority reported 579 confirmed deaths, including 517 foreign nationals, among them a 60-year-old Israeli. In Tibet, over 550 people are missing, though it is unclear if these numbers overlap with Nepal's missing. Some estimates combine the missing to about 2,500, though this figure is disputed.

Drone footage released from China captured the glacier's collapse from over 7,200 meters altitude, showing a huge dust cloud as the ice crashed about a kilometer down into the valley. The collapse triggered a massive mudslide and flood along the Trishuli River, with seismic activity equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake caused by the falling ice and rock. The mud and water surged at speeds of approximately 50 meters per second (180 km/h) over a 20-kilometer stretch.

Rescue efforts resumed after a brief pause due to fears that newly formed glacial lakes might burst, causing further flooding. One lake began overflowing, prompting a three-hour halt in rescue operations in Nepal. Helicopters are the primary means of rescue, as the flood destroyed dozens of bridges and blocked over 40 kilometers of roads. More than 3,200 people have been airlifted, mainly to Kathmandu.

Eyewitnesses described the flood as a tsunami-like wave of mud and water, with one survivor comparing it to a Hollywood disaster scene. The flood devastated the border region between Tibet and Nepal, burying infrastructure and isolating communities. Authorities in both countries warn that the new glacial lakes pose an ongoing risk of catastrophic flooding if they breach.

The disaster highlights the vulnerability of mountainous border regions to climate-related glacier collapses and the challenges of conducting rescue operations in such terrain.
