Israeli MMA Fighter Ilay Barzilai Nears UFC Contract

Israeli mixed martial artist Ilay Barzilai is closer than ever to signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), following his recent victory over Lucas Almeida at the GFN event. Barzilai, who holds an 8-1 professional record, believes the UFC is aware of his potential and the significant fan base he commands in Israel.

"My time is near," Barzilai stated in an exclusive interview, explaining that the UFC contacted his agent after his last fight, inquiring about his availability for a short-notice bout in late August. Although he was not chosen for that specific fight, he was told to remain ready, with the UFC expressing interest in signing him.

Barzilai understands the UFC's strategic approach, particularly with non-American fighters, and is patiently waiting for the right opportunity. He is currently in Brazil assisting fellow fighter Jean Silva, emphasizing mutual support within the fighting community. He anticipates a contract within weeks or months, possibly by the end of the year or early next year.

He revealed that UFC executive Sean Shelby has spoken positively about his fighting style. Barzilai expressed confidence in the UFC's long-term plans for him, noting that his youth is an advantage. He also identified a potential dream fight: a rematch against Richie Miranda in the UFC to avenge a previous loss he felt was unjust.

Barzilai highlighted his well-rounded fighting skills, asserting that he has proven himself against tough opponents in striking and grappling, demonstrating his suitability for the UFC's elite level. He believes his performances have effectively communicated his capabilities to the organization.
