Muhammad Tops List of Most Common Names for First Graders in Israel
As the school year approaches, Israel's Population and Immigration Authority has released data on the most popular names for incoming first-graders for the 2026-2027 academic year. Muhammad is the most common name among boys across all sectors, followed by Yusuf and Adam. In the Jewish sector, Ariel leads the boys' list.
Overall, Tamar is the most popular name for girls, with Miriam and Abigail ranking second and third. The top ten girls' names also include Adele, Sarah, Yael, Noa, Shira, Lia, and Maya.
For boys in the general population, Yusuf is second and Adam is third. Other popular boys' names include David, Omer, Ariel, Daniel, Lavi, Ethan, and Ahmed.
Within the Jewish sector, Ariel is the top boys' name, followed by David and Lavi. Uri, Daniel, Ethan, Noam, Itai, Rafael, and Yehuda complete the top ten.
Among Jewish girls, Tamar also ranks first, with Abigail second and Yael third. Noa, Adele, Shira, Sarah, Ayala, Lia, and Ella follow.
