Former Minister Yaakov Margi Departs Politics Citing Loss of Respect and Values

Former Israeli Minister Yaakov Margi announced his departure from political life after 24 years in the Knesset and nearly five decades of public service. In a farewell interview with Channel 14's Oded Harosh, Margi explained his decision to leave, citing a decline in the Knesset's discourse and a perceived lack of fundamental values.

Margi, who previously served as Minister of Welfare and Social Services and as Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, stated that the political system has lost its way, with "no value to a word, no value to honor, no values at all." He criticized the current style of debate, characterized by "lies," and asserted that the "good of the country does not interest them," applying this observation to Knesset members from "both sides."

He expressed a feeling of complicity in harming Israeli society due to his participation in the current Knesset, stating, "We are robbing it of national pride, of resilience, and of social cohesion." Margi also commented on the controversial judicial reform, acknowledging his support for its core principles but criticizing the method of its introduction, comparing it to drinking too much water, which can be harmful. He suggested a more gradual approach, "a slice and another slice, step by step."

Despite his criticisms, Margi recalled an uplifting moment during his departure from the Knesset when members from across the political spectrum applauded him, which he saw as proof that "it is possible differently." He plans to dedicate his time to family, grandchildren, writing, and social activities outside of politics, aiming to continue contributing to Israeli society on a different platform.
