IDF Assesses Gaza City Ground Operation Necessary as Hamas Rebuilds

Ahead of the three-year mark of the October 7th massacre, Israeli security officials believe a ground operation to occupy Gaza City is unavoidable, according to a report by Walla. This assessment stems from intelligence indicating Hamas is rebuilding its forces, establishing terror infrastructure within Gaza, and developing capabilities for attacks against Israel in the West Bank and globally.

In mid-May, Southern Command chief Major General Yev Aso presented a phased plan to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir for conquering Gaza City, where most Hamas commanders and operatives are believed to be hiding. The plan includes provisions for evacuating and relocating the civilian population to new humanitarian zones. This strategy was developed after it became clear Hamas is delaying, refusing to disarm or relinquish control, and exhibiting increased confidence, reportedly following meetings between its leaders and Jared Kushner.

Following Hamas's use of kites and concerns about drone deployment and attack infrastructure against Israeli forces, Israel has resumed targeted killings and airstrikes against militants. However, security officials warn that the current situation, where Hamas rebuilds and the IDF relies on airstrikes, is unsustainable. They advocate for a large-scale ground maneuver involving multiple divisions, to be potentially launched after the upcoming Israeli and US elections.

Last week, the IDF destroyed a Hamas outpost in Jabalia, northern Gaza, used for ambushes and storing weapons. This site, located about 50 meters from the "blue line" and near a hospital and school, was used to plan attacks against IDF forces and was part of Hamas's rebuilding efforts. Several militants were killed in the strike. The IDF has been conducting airstrikes against Hamas operatives, including some involved in the October 7th attacks.

Recently, Lt. Gen. Zamir visited the Gaza Division headquarters, where he spoke with female observers about their operational activities and challenges. He emphasized the importance of their role in identifying threats and closing operational loops, stating that a key lesson from October 7th is the need to never underestimate the enemy and to heed all intelligence from soldiers.
