Israel and Turkey Trade Barbs Over Zionism and Regional Actions

Tensions between Israel and Turkey escalated over the weekend with sharp public exchanges between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Israeli officials. Erdoğan initiated the exchange on Friday, accusing Israel's government of being "war-mongering" and seeking to destabilize the region through provocations and "blood libels."

Erdoğan further condemned "Zionism" as an "extreme, occupying, and murderous ideology" targeting not only Israel's neighbors but also those who advocate for regional peace and humanitarian values. He specifically cited Gaza, calling it the "world's largest graveyard for children" due to alleged "genocide."

Israel's Foreign Ministry responded with a personal attack on Erdoğan, accusing him of acting like "the worst antisemites in history" and engaging in incitement to divert attention from his domestic actions and regional policies. The ministry alleged Erdoğan has destroyed Turkish democracy, imprisoned political rivals, hosted and supported Hamas, and invaded neighboring countries.

Responding to Israel's statement, a spokesperson for Erdoğan, Burhanettin Duran, dismissed the accusations as propaganda and claimed Israel was hiding its "aggression, genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity" behind claims of antisemitism. He stated Erdoğan would continue to support the Palestinian cause and regional stability.

On Sunday night, Turkey's Foreign Ministry in Ankara issued its own condemnation, calling Israeli statements "cowardly and corrupt" and comparing Israel's public diplomacy efforts to Nazi propaganda, specifically mentioning Joseph Goebbels. The ministry asserted that the international community no longer believes Israel's narrative.
