Ben Gurion Airport Tightens Security to Prevent Draft Dodgers Traveling to Uman

Ben Gurion Airport is implementing enhanced security measures, including military police and a dedicated arrest vehicle, to prevent draft dodgers from leaving Israel amidst the upcoming "airlift" to Uman, Ukraine, for Rosh Hashanah. The measures aim to close security loopholes exploited during recent periods of heavy congestion at the airport.

Security and law enforcement officials at Ben Gurion Airport are preparing for a significant increase in passengers traveling to Uman for the Jewish New Year. This surge is expected to include individuals attempting to evade military service by leaving the country. The new policy, developed through discussions between the Ministry of Transportation, the Population and Immigration Authority, and the IDF, seeks to address a loophole where draft dodgers have been attaching themselves to legitimate travelers to bypass exit restrictions.

Under the new protocol, passport control stations before the duty-free area will be reinforced with military police and Ministry of Transportation representatives to assist immigration officials. A dedicated arrest vehicle will be stationed in the airside area to apprehend individuals attempting to circumvent exit procedures. The primary goal is to prevent draft dodgers from passing through passport control without their passports being stamped, thereby entering the aircraft boarding area.

Airport authorities are concerned about potential images of chaos, especially after recent severe congestion that drew international attention. The reinforced security presence is set to begin in the coming days as the airport increases its readiness level.
