Ultra-Orthodox Protesters Block Jerusalem Entrance Over Sabbath Disputes

On Saturday, August 24, 2026, ultra-Orthodox protesters attempted to block the main entrance to Jerusalem, disrupting traffic and preventing buses from entering the city. The protesters were demonstrating against what they claim is Sabbath desecration occurring in Jerusalem. Israeli police remain on site to ensure traffic flow continues. Adir Schwartz, Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor, condemned the blockade as crossing a red line, emphasizing that no group can shut down the city or intimidate its residents. He affirmed that the liberal public in Jerusalem will continue to live, visit, and enjoy the city on the Sabbath, asserting that Jerusalem belongs to everyone. Schwartz called on the police to act decisively, as they have in past incidents.

Earlier on the same day, about 20 ultra-Orthodox protesters tried to delay bus traffic from Safed to Nahariya at the Meron junction, but police prevented them from blocking the road. Local residents from the "Free Way" movement were present to oppose the protesters and advocate for free weekend traffic.

In Bnei Brak, recent attempts to block roads with fences and containers to prevent vehicle passage were removed by police, who deemed the blockades illegal. A truck driver who placed containers on a neighborhood access road was summoned for questioning after claiming he was sent by the municipality. For younger residents, the road disputes reflect deeper issues about housing availability in the neighborhood.
