Nick Calathes Praises Yam Madar’s Move to Maccabi Tel Aviv as Right Decision

Greek-American guard Nick Calathes, in an exclusive interview with Channel Sports, discussed his views on Israeli basketball, including his former teammate Yam Madar’s recent transfer to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Calathes, who currently plays for Panathinaikos and has a contract for two more years, expressed admiration for Israel and its basketball scene, noting that although he never had the chance to play in Israel himself, he is a fan of the country. His brother played for Maccabi Haifa and won a championship there, which Calathes recalls fondly.

Calathes also spoke highly of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s coach, Oded Katash, praising his game management and player relations. He said, "I really like Oded Katash. We have a good relationship. I admire how he runs the game and the team. He has an excellent sense for basketball and a good approach to his players. I have great respect for him, though unfortunately, we never got to work together."

Regarding Yam Madar, with whom Calathes played at Fenerbahce, he stated that Madar made the right choice by joining Maccabi Tel Aviv, calling it the best option for him. Calathes believes Madar will transform the team’s atmosphere and is exactly the kind of point guard they need. He described Madar as "the future of Israeli basketball," alongside NBA player Deni Avdija.

The interview took place after Greece’s 82-76 loss to Ukraine in a EuroBasket qualifier, with Ukraine hosting home games in Riga due to security concerns. Calathes acknowledged previous opportunities to play in Israel but emphasized his current commitment to Panathinaikos. He concluded by reaffirming his affection for Israel and its basketball community.
