IDF Airstrike Targets Terror Leader in Jenin Amid Rising West Bank Tensions

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike on Friday afternoon targeting militants in the Jenin area of the West Bank. The primary target was the head of a terror cell planning attacks, who was in a vehicle along with two aides. The strike involved a missile launched from a drone that hit the vehicle. In recent years, several terror cell leaders in Jenin have been eliminated, and this operation signals ongoing militant regrouping efforts in the region. The airstrike is notable as the IDF has not carried out aerial attacks in the West Bank in recent months, maintaining operational control over large parts of Judea and Samaria.

For over a year, the IDF has maintained a presence inside the Jenin refugee camp, having taken control and evacuated residents due to frequent attacks originating there. The military has expanded access routes, destroyed militant infrastructure, and conducted arrests within the camp. Just yesterday, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir announced increased readiness measures, including the deployment of an additional regular brigade to reinforce forces in the area ahead of the upcoming holiday period. This reinforcement is an unusual step aimed at improving command and control by dividing security responsibilities between two brigades.

The new brigade may take command of the southern West Bank sectors of Judea and Etzion, while the rest of the region, including Benjamin, Samaria, Ephraim, and Menashe, will remain under the existing West Bank Division. This restructuring may also serve as a message to the United States, which has expressed concern over recent nationalist Jewish crime incidents. Earlier today, journalist Nadav Eyal reported that Chief of Staff Zamir personally warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the West Bank could spiral out of control due to rising nationalist Jewish violence.
