IDF Reveals 2026 Salary Data Amid Rising Combat Fatigue and Retention Challenges
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published new salary data for 2026, revealing the monthly gross pay of commanders and officers amid nearly three years of ongoing combat and increasing fatigue. According to the figures reported by Yossi Yehoshua in Yedioth Ahronoth, a platoon commander in a combat battalion earns about 18,700 shekels, a deputy battalion commander around 30,000 shekels, and a battalion commander approximately 34,300 shekels. Brigade commanders receive about 41,200 shekels monthly. These salaries reflect recent raises funded by a dedicated budget increase from the Finance Ministry and internal IDF budget reallocations following the war.
Lower ranks and roles earn significantly less. Sample data shows young cyber and intelligence officers in Unit 8200 earn around 9,000 shekels, a human resources officer in a brigade about 9,300 shekels, and a logistics officer in the Technology and Logistics Directorate roughly 10,800 shekels. A cyber officer in the Combat Engineering Corps earns about 10,500 shekels, while a captain in the IDF spokesperson’s office serving in a staff role makes around 11,400 shekels.
The IDF highlights difficulties in retaining personnel, especially in technological and intelligence units where private sector salaries are often higher. This retention challenge extends beyond tech roles to combat command positions, where prolonged intensive service has led to significant burnout. Many commanders have gone months without returning home, causing a decline in candidates for command roles and prompting many officers to leave the service. Some positions are now filled by junior officers below the official staffing level, a situation the IDF terms "under-strength." Despite these challenges, 72% of soldiers’ spouses report pride and partnership in the service, and 68% support continued military service.
