18-Year-Old Honduran Midfielder Moncada Ends Maccabi Tel Aviv's European Dream

Maccabi Tel Aviv's hopes of advancing in the UEFA Conference League were dashed after 18-year-old Honduran winger Derek Moncada scored a long-range equalizer for FC Lugano, leading to a 2-3 aggregate victory over the Israeli club. Moncada, who debuted for the senior team of Club Deportivo Olimpia at just 16 in February 2024, has quickly risen as one of Honduras' most promising talents. He made 41 appearances for Olimpia, scoring seven goals and providing three assists, and was loaned to Inter Bogotá in Colombia during 2026, where he contributed five goals and two assists.

In May 2026, Moncada signed a five-year contract with Lugano for a transfer fee of 3 million euros. This season, he has impressed with four goals and one assist in ten appearances across all competitions. At 17, he became the youngest player to represent the Honduran national team since 1994. Moncada is the son of former Premier League defender Maynor Figueroa, who played for Wigan Athletic and Hull City between 2008 and 2013. His half-brother, Kairo Figueroa, is part of Liverpool's academy and is also regarded as a promising talent.

Lugano's coach, Mattia Croci-Torti, praised Moncada's exceptional physical attributes, while sporting director Sebastian Platzer highlighted his enormous potential and the club's commitment to supporting his development. Media outlets have described Moncada as a "jewel" with no ceiling, noting his powerful shot, aerial ability, physical strength, and professionalism. Despite Maccabi Tel Aviv's early optimism after Dor Peretz's penalty goal, Moncada's decisive strike ended their European campaign.
