18-Year-Old Honduran Derek Moncada Ends Maccabi Tel Aviv's European Dream

Maccabi Tel Aviv's hopes of advancing in the UEFA Conference League were dashed after Derek Moncada, an 18-year-old winger from Honduras, scored a long-range equalizer for Swiss club Lugano. The goal came about ten minutes after Maccabi's Dor Peretz had converted a penalty, leveling the match at 1-1 and contributing to Lugano's 3-2 aggregate victory, which eliminated Maccabi from the competition.

Moncada made his senior debut for Club Deportivo Olimpia on February 1, 2024, at just 16 years old. Over his time there, he appeared in 41 matches across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. In 2026, he was loaned to Inter Bogotá in Colombia, where he added five goals and two assists. He joined Lugano in May 2026 on a five-year contract for a transfer fee of 3 million euros. This season, he has impressed with four goals and one assist in ten appearances.

Recognized as one of Honduras' most promising talents, Moncada became the youngest player to represent the Honduran national team since 1994. He is the son of former Premier League defender Maynor Figueroa, who played for Wigan Athletic and Hull City between 2008 and 2013. His half-brother, Kairo Figueroa, is part of Liverpool's academy and is also considered a promising prospect.

Lugano's coach, Mattia Croci-Torti, praised Moncada's physical attributes, noting they are rare in their league. Sporting director Sebastian Platzer highlighted Moncada's enormous potential and the club's commitment to supporting his development. Media outlets have described him as a "jewel" with no ceiling, praising his long-range shooting, aerial ability, physical strength, and professionalism.
