Portland will not release Deni Avdija for Israel's national team
The Israel Basketball Association said Monday evening that Deni Avdija will not join Israel this summer for the World Cup qualifying window. The federation said it received a letter from the NBA a few days ago stating that Portland does not intend to release Avdija for the upcoming July games.
Avdija will therefore miss Israel's two qualifiers against Germany and Croatia, scheduled for July 3 and July 6. The national team roster is expected to be announced in the coming days, and training will begin next Sunday, June 21.
Avdija played for Israel in EuroBasket last summer and helped lead the team to the round of 16, its first appearance at that stage in 10 years. He finished the tournament with an average of 24 points per game, the third-best scoring average in the championship behind Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
