Israeli Security Prepares to Reopen Erez Crossing for Goods Amid US Pressure

The Israeli security establishment is preparing to reopen the Erez Crossing for the entry of goods only, with a target date set for September 1, 2026. Although final approval has not yet been granted, officials are ready for the crossing to resume operations next week. This move comes amid increased pressure from the US administration to advance to the next phase in Gaza, as part of the implementation of President Donald Trump's 20-point plan.

A security source told N12 that the request to reopen the crossing originated from the Americans several months ago and is linked to the preparations for phase two of the plan. In recent weeks, Israeli officials have engaged in difficult talks with the US government regarding the continuation of the process.

Despite the US push, Israel maintains its firm stance that progress depends on the disarmament of Hamas in Gaza. Israeli Defense Chief Aviv Kochavi reiterated this position, emphasizing that Israel’s ultimate goal remains the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the dismantling of Hamas’s weapons. The reopening of the Erez Crossing is thus seen as a limited step focused solely on goods, without easing security demands.
