Australia Tops List as Safest Country in Global Disaster Scenarios, Israel Faces High Risk

A new study led by Florian Ulrich Yen from the University of Hagen in Germany analyzed over 200 global disaster scenarios, including nuclear war, asteroid impacts, massive volcanic eruptions, cyberattacks, and pandemics, to determine which countries would be safest. Australia ranked highest due to its geographic isolation, strong food production capacity, and extensive industrial and mining sectors. Yen explained that as an island, Australia can easily isolate itself and sustain itself with local resources. However, the study noted Australia's vulnerability due to its dependence on imported fuel, medicines, and fertilizers, which could be critical if global supply chains collapse.

Following Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, and Argentina were also identified as resilient countries. The researchers emphasized that the study aims not only to find potential refuges but also to identify nations capable of maintaining food production, seed reserves, and industry to help the world recover after a catastrophe.

Regarding Israel, the study highlighted that direct effects of nuclear weapons would devastate targeted areas, especially countries involved in nuclear conflicts or those in conflict with nuclear powers. Israel, along with the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea, is considered at high risk. Countries engaged in conflicts with these nuclear states, such as Ukraine with Russia or Iran with Israel and the US, are also vulnerable. Although the study does not provide a precise ranking for Israel, it generally does not classify Israel as a safe country in the event of a global disaster.
