Rabbi Yitzchak Azarahi Urges Strengthening Fear of God in Inspirational Jerusalem Lecture

At the start of the Days of Awe, Rabbi Yitzchak Azarahi, head of the Mir Yeshiva, delivered an uplifting lecture at the Zichron Meir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, led by Rabbi Isser Yehuda Malin. Rabbi Azarahi emphasized the unique closeness God grants to Israel compared to angels, explaining that while angels require three words to sanctify God's name, Israel can do so after just two words due to their fear of Heaven.

He stressed that fear of Heaven is essential and must be actively cultivated through study and devotion. Citing Talmudic stories, including that of Rabbi Nachman bar Yitzchak and his mother's advice to always cover his head to maintain fear of Heaven, Rabbi Azarahi illustrated that Torah study alone is insufficient without this fear. He highlighted that prayer and study must be combined, as one without the other leaves a person spiritually lacking.

Rabbi Azarahi also quoted Rabbi Yonah and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, underscoring the importance of honoring commandments as emissaries of God and warned against neglecting them, which equates to disrespecting God. He urged listeners to constantly evaluate their actions to ensure they honor God in all they do.

He concluded by encouraging everyone to work diligently on developing fear of Heaven, noting that even great sages like Rabbi Nachman bar Yitzchak struggled but ultimately succeeded through persistent effort. Rabbi Azarahi also stressed the importance of empathy and prayer for others, referencing the Chazon Ish's teaching that one lacking participation in others' suffering is spiritually deficient. He wished all success and divine assistance in their spiritual endeavors during this critical time.
