Former Security Official Criticizes Netanyahu Over Handling of Iranian Assassination Attempt on Son

Abner Wilan, a former senior Israeli security official, sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the political use of intelligence related to an Iranian assassination attempt on Netanyahu's son, Yair. Speaking on 103FM radio on Thursday, Wilan condemned the way the information was disclosed, bypassing censorship and being revealed in a highly politicized manner on Channel 14. He argued that such exposure undermines the work of intelligence personnel who dedicate their lives to protecting Israel, and that Netanyahu exploited the sensitive intelligence for political gain.

Wilan warned that publicizing such sensitive information could damage Israel's security apparatus and its ability to operate effectively. He said this cynical use of classified intelligence erodes the country’s fundamental defense capabilities. Wilan also took a direct jab at Netanyahu, saying, "If he wasn’t panicking and maybe had some sense, he would think twice before such reckless exposure."

Regarding the assassination attempt reported in the United States, Wilan stated that Iran’s retaliatory actions should not come as a surprise given Israel’s killing of a sovereign state leader and its declared all-out war against Iran. He emphasized Iran’s strategic coherence despite external pressures and cautioned that Iran’s nuclear program continues to advance, potentially leading Tehran to conclude it no longer needs to negotiate with the U.S. if it achieves a true nuclear capability.
