IDF Soldiers Refuse to Board APC Due to Female Paramedic, Face Court Martial

In a recent incident reported on Wednesday, soldiers from the Rotem Battalion of the Givati Brigade in southern Lebanon refused to board an armored personnel carrier (APC) because a female paramedic was present. The incident was reported to the battalion commanders, who decided to subject the soldiers to a court martial. The IDF spokesperson clarified that the soldiers have not yet been tried.

This event comes amid ongoing public and legal debates about integrating women into combat roles within the IDF. In June, the military issued a clarification stating that the Israeli Supreme Court had not mandated the conscription of women into the Armored Corps but only ordered a pilot program to explore the possibility. The pilot is intended as an initial experiment and does not commit to full integration.

The IDF emphasized the need for all soldiers, men and women alike, especially after two and a half years of multi-front combat and expanded missions. Following the announcement of the pilot, some religious military preparatory schools (Yeshivot Hesder) announced they would halt recruitment of their students. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi addressed these concerns at a military workers' conference, underscoring the importance of integrating all populations into the army, particularly combat units, while managing the social and logistical challenges involved.

Kochavi also clarified that there is no intention to mix men and women in tank crews or during training and missions. Should the pilot succeed, female integration will occur in dedicated units, at least at the company level, with necessary adjustments for combat team operations as per the IDF's joint service regulations.
