Israel Says Turkey's Attempt to Establish Presence at Syrian Airport Is Thwarted

Israeli officials assess that Turkey's efforts to establish a foothold at the Idlib airport in northern Syria have been blocked, marking a significant shift from earlier security concerns. This development follows an Israeli Air Force strike on the airport and subsequent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, including talks between senior Israeli, Turkish, and Syrian officials.

Defense Minister Israel Katz visited the Golan Heights near Syria and warned Turkey against returning to the area, stating Israel would not hesitate to strike again if Turkey attempts to reestablish itself there. Katz was accompanied by Deputy Chief of Staff Tamir Yadai and Northern Command Chief Major General Rafi Milo during the visit, where he received briefings from commanders on the ground.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned Katz's entry into Syrian territory, issuing a harsh denunciation. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded on social media with a veiled threat, saying, "Those who think Turkey can be stopped with provocations and conspiracies will be disappointed."

The easing of tensions came after a series of meetings, including one between Israeli official Roman Gofman and the Syrian Foreign Minister, which contributed to a change in Israel's assessment of the situation. Israel Katz emphasized that Israel acted decisively against Turkey's attempts to endanger Israeli security interests in Syria and will continue to uphold its position in the future.
