Israeli Agritech CropX Acquires SCIO to Expand Agricultural Quality Testing Capabilities
Israeli agritech company CropX has acquired the startup SCIO, which developed technology for on-site testing of food and agricultural produce quality and composition. The acquisition is considered a disappointing exit for SCIO, which had raised approximately $64 million since its founding in 2011, while the purchase price is reportedly lower than that amount. SCIO, originally named Consumer Physics and founded by Asaf Karmi and Damian Goldring (no longer with the company), is headquartered in Israel and operates in the agriculture and food sectors. Its innovative technology, protected by 44 patents, enables rapid field measurements of produce quality without traditional lab tests.
CropX, established in 2015 and active in over 70 countries, has raised more than $60 million from investors including OurCrowd, NEC Corporation, Aliaxis, Innovation Endeavors, and Finistere Ventures. This acquisition marks CropX's eighth and significantly broadens its platform capabilities beyond field management and crop growth to include analysis of produce quality and composition. CropX CEO Tomer Tzah stated that SCIO fills a critical gap by linking agronomic recommendations with harvest outcomes and produce quality, laying the foundation for a new generation of agronomic intelligence and advancing their vision to build the most comprehensive agricultural intelligence platform worldwide.
