Arab American Museum in Michigan Sparks Controversy Over Pro-Palestinian Exhibits and October 7 Portrayal

The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, which receives government funding, has recently come under fire for its pro-Palestinian displays and its portrayal of the October 7 Hamas attack. According to Fox News, parts of the museum accuse Israel of "occupation" and "apartheid," highlighting alleged harm to Palestinian civilians and restrictions on basic needs. The museum shop sells Palestinian-themed items such as magnets shaped like maps, keffiyehs, and coloring books focused on Palestinian heritage.

Controversy is expected to intensify around a planned event on September 10, the eve of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, when the museum will screen the film "Seeds for Liberation." The film reportedly frames the October 7 Hamas massacre as part of a decades-long Palestinian struggle. The museum also addresses the 9/11 attacks by noting that the Arab American community "suffered twice", from the attacks themselves and from subsequent discrimination. It hosts events highlighting discrimination and law enforcement actions against Arabs and Muslims following 9/11.

Founded in 2005, the museum operates independently but maintains an official partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grants over the years. Neither the museum nor the Smithsonian responded to Fox News' request for comment.
