Israeli Defense Minister Katz Vows to Maintain Military Presence on Syrian Golan Heights Amid Security Threats

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz visited IDF commanders and soldiers stationed at the Hermon summit in Syria on Tuesday. The visit included senior military officials such as Deputy Chief of Staff Tamir Yadai, Northern Command Chief Rafi Milo, and head of the Syria branch in the IDF, Rasan Alian. Katz received a detailed briefing on the security situation and praised the troops for their ongoing efforts in the region.

Katz emphasized that Israeli forces are positioned across the Hermon, the Golan Heights, and the security zone, monitoring key areas including Damascus, the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, and Hezbollah strongholds. He highlighted the threat posed by jihadist groups operating within Syria, some embedded in the regime and others in terrorist organizations, all aiming to attack Israel.

He declared that the IDF will remain in the area and will not withdraw as long as threats persist, citing lessons learned from the October 7 attacks. Katz stressed daily operations to thwart threats, dismantle remnants of the old Syrian regime, and prevent the emergence of dangerous new forces.

Addressing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Katz stated that Israel’s presence on the Hermon is a clear message of defense for Israeli communities and borders. He also referenced Israel’s actions against Turkish attempts to establish a foothold in Syria, underscoring Israel’s commitment to preventing Syria from becoming a security threat. Katz concluded by affirming that Israel destroyed Assad’s strategic military infrastructure within days and will continue to address threats to ensure national security.
