Israeli Journalist Michal Peilin Faces Criticism Over Controversial Social Media Post

Michal Peilin, a journalist for Israel's Channel 12 News, has come under fire following a social media post that sparked widespread controversy. Peilin, who extensively covered the struggle of families of hostages recently returned from Hamas captivity, shared a story featuring a screenshot of a message from her brother saying, "Good morning, you succeeded!" She captioned it, "State of matter: receiving a message from my big brother and bursting into tears."

This post was perceived by many as Peilin taking undue credit for the hostages' return, leading to sharp criticism from fellow journalists and commentators. Aryeh Leib Abrams of Channel 12 News reported that television critic Einav Schiff described Peilin as "a severe case of lack of self-awareness, bordering on megalomania." Journalist Arel Segal sarcastically remarked that Peilin claimed the hostages' return was due to her efforts, not the soldiers, the Prime Minister, or the US President, calling it "a stunning level of megalomania, stupidity, and detachment."

David Wertheim, a media commentator for Walla!, wrote a critical opinion piece suggesting that Peilin's behavior is not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a mindset where she personally claims decisive influence over geopolitical events in the Middle East. Wertheim recalled previous instances, including a broadcast where Peilin appeared without makeup dedicated to the hostages and her claims of standing bravely against a "poison machine" aiming to destroy her.
