Israel Allows Two-Year Extensions for Temporary A/5 Residency Permits Under New Policy

In July 2026, Israel's Ministry of Interior updated its procedures to allow temporary A/5 residency permits, issued to spouses of Israeli citizens or permanent residents, to be extended for two years instead of the previous one-year term. This change aims to reduce the bureaucratic burden on couples who must regularly renew their permits during the gradual process of obtaining permanent status. However, the two-year extension is not automatic and depends on the discretion of the reviewing official and the strength of evidence presented.

The A/5 permit requires periodic renewal, during which the authorities reassess the genuineness and continuity of the marital relationship. Applicants must appear in person at the Population and Immigration Authority office, submit original documents including a valid foreign passport, and pay a fee. If the renewal application is submitted on time but not yet decided by the permit's expiration, the current permit can be extended for three additional months.

The official's decision heavily relies on personal impressions from interviews and documentation proving shared life, such as joint residence proofs, shared household management, bank accounts, employment records, and official personal status documents. Stronger evidence increases the likelihood of a two-year extension.
