Conspiracy Theories Fuel Global Antisemitism and Undermine Trust in Israel

Antisemitism differs fundamentally from other prejudices, often extending beyond negative stereotypes to dangerous conspiracy theories. Historian Deborah Lipstadt highlights that Jews have long been targets of conspiratorial accusations, falsely portrayed as secretly controlling global affairs, U.S. foreign policy, or immigration flows. Contemporary figures like American influencers Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson perpetuate these harmful myths, with Carlson recently alleging Jewish involvement in migration through Spain's Ceuta crossing.

The classic antisemitic text, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, epitomizes this trend by alleging a secret Jewish plot to dominate the world, inciting fear and justifying violence. Such conspiracies have historically led to horrific outcomes, including genocide. While conspiracy theories have targeted other groups, Jewish conspiracies have uniquely fueled systemic threats, as seen in the European witch hunts and the Spanish Inquisition, which often intertwined persecution of Jews and alleged witches.

Modern conspiracy movements like QAnon, initially unrelated to Jews, have increasingly incorporated antisemitic elements, focusing on Jews and Israel. This conspiratorial mindset has also permeated Israeli politics, where some Knesset members spread false conspiracy theories about security forces and the events of October 7, aiming for social media traction and political gain. These narratives erode public trust in security institutions and indirectly validate antisemitic theories abroad.

The sociologist and senior researcher at the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) warns that such conspiracy thinking damages both Jews and Israel, reinforcing dangerous myths that have historically led to violence and discrimination. He stresses that the consequences of these conspiracies are severe and that combating them is crucial to protecting Jewish communities worldwide.
