Israeli World Cup Memory Ace Recounts Nearly 970 Matches Without Missing a Beat
Roni, an Israeli football memory expert, appeared on ynet’s studio show and correctly answered every World Cup question thrown at him. He says he can recall the results of almost 970 World Cup matches, from group-stage games to knockout ties, and explained that the tournaments contain “a little less” than 1,000 matches overall.
The interview opened with two historical examples. Asked about Czechoslovakia against Spain at the 1962 World Cup, Roni immediately answered, “Czechoslovakia won 1-0.” When the hosts moved to the 1994 round of 16 and Germany versus Belgium, he replied, “In 94 Germany beat Belgium 3-2.” He also got the 2006 group-stage match between Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden right, saying it ended 0-0.
Roni said his obsession started because he loves football and finds it fascinating. He noted that he mainly remembers results, while scorers are harder for him to recall. He also said that much of the material he keeps in a folder is printed from Wikipedia.
Beyond football, Roni said he uses his memory in other ways, including mental calculations, converting Gregorian dates to Hebrew dates, and naming the day of the week. He said he also presents sports news daily on YouTube, where he has uploaded about 4,000 videos. His advice for training memory was simple: “It’s like a muscle, I train it, so it improves. Everything in life comes with practice.”
