Criticism of Mansour Abbas Over Shift in Stance on Palestinian Nakba and Statehood

Mansour Abbas, leader of the United Arab List (Ra'am), faces sharp criticism following his recent interview on Channel 12, where he appeared to retreat from previous statements about the 1948 Palestinian Nakba and the establishment of Israel. Amar Al-Huzail, former acting and deputy mayor of Rahat, condemned Abbas's comments, interpreting them as a significant shift in political identity aimed at repositioning the Arab list within Israel's political system.

Al-Huzail questioned Abbas's denial of the Nakba, a historical event acknowledged even by Israel's far-right, and described Abbas's approach as a new strategy to reshape Arab public consciousness and integrate the Arab list into the Israeli political mainstream. He explained that Abbas seeks to enter the political arena not to change its rules but to influence it from within, believing that participation in government will yield tangible benefits for Arab citizens.

However, Al-Huzail warned that this strategy risks reducing political participation to a choice between lesser evils, potentially sacrificing principled stands for pragmatic gains. He also raised concerns about whether Arab integration into the Zionist consensus will transform that consensus or alter Arab identity itself. Ultimately, Al-Huzail cautioned that success in this approach might lead to normalization and political adaptation to "Zionization," turning a tactical move into a dead end if systemic conditions remain unchanged.
