Netanyahu Records Statement on Altalena Discovery, Avoids Photo with National Security Minister Ben Gvir

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu avoided taking a joint photo with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Monday, instead releasing a solo recorded statement from Tel Aviv beach. This occurred separately from a press conference held at the Etzel Museum, where Ben Gvir was present. Ben Gvir's associates described the incident as "embarrassing." During the event, Ben Gvir criticized Netanyahu, comparing himself to former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who understood being excluded from photos despite being a loyal partner and advisor. Ben Gvir said, "Begin knew what it meant to be boycotted and not photographed, but he stood by his truth."

Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, also at the museum event, acknowledged tensions and justified feelings of hurt, noting that mutual support was expected after years of cooperation. Ben Gvir's team accused Netanyahu of intending to align with Benny Gantz, suggesting Netanyahu is now excluding Ben Gvir despite his four years of support, likening the treatment to what Begin experienced.

In his recorded statement, Netanyahu reiterated his plan to form a "broad national government" to secure Israel's future and security. He emphasized the lesson from the Altalena affair, stating, "Division is weakness, and unity is strength." Earlier, Ben Gvir criticized the Likud campaign in a Kan 11 interview, saying Netanyahu "does not speak clearly enough" and that his associates promote a unity government with Gantz, which Ben Gvir called a "paralysis government." He argued that Israel needs a clear choice between right and left, criticizing the Likud's "half-and-half" approach.

Ben Gvir also accused Netanyahu's close circle of undermining May Golan in the primaries to pave the way for a unity government with Gantz excluding him. The episode highlights growing rifts within the coalition ahead of upcoming elections.
