Saka’s Fitness Worries England Before World Cup Opener
England will begin its World Cup 2026 campaign on Wednesday against strong Croatia in Dallas, in Group 12, as Thomas Tuchel’s side tries to end a 60-year drought and bring home football’s top trophy. The main story in the English media ahead of the tournament is Bukayo Saka’s condition.
The Arsenal forward, who has been carrying an Achilles injury since March, “does not look at his best,” the Daily Mail reported. According to the report, Saka took part in a small-sided training game against Inter Miami, but only for limited minutes, and his fitness remains a concern for the England camp.
Tuchel hinted last week that Saka’s playing time would be restricted, at least at the start of the tournament. “We need to be careful with Saka’s injury. He got back to himself at the end of the season, but he still needed his workload managed between matches, and that will continue at the World Cup,” the German coach said.
Tuchel is expected to start Noni Madueke, also of Arsenal, on the right wing, with Anthony Gordon favored on the left over Marcus Rashford. In central defense, Ezri Konsa is expected to partner John Stones, while Jude Bellingham is the leading candidate to play as England’s No. 10 instead of Morgan Rogers.
