Tel Aviv Residents Protest Plan to Relocate Separate Religious Beach to Northern Shoreline

A heated controversy has erupted in northern Tel Aviv over the municipality's plan to move the city's separate religious beach from its current location at Nordau to a northern strip near the Herzliya border, adjacent to the northern Cliff Beach. This beach currently serves the religious and ultra-Orthodox communities with gender-segregated swimming days: women on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and men on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Local residents and activists from Tel Aviv and the Sharon region have organized protests and circulated a petition titled "Keeping Cliff Beach Open to Everyone," expressing fears that the relocation will reduce public open beach space, increase crowding, and disrupt existing recreational uses by swimmers, surfers, runners, and families. They argue that the new site, although north of the designated Cliff Beach, is already heavily used by the public and that establishing a separate beach there would effectively create a new segregated area at the expense of open access.

The Tel Aviv municipality clarifies that the plan is not to add a new separate beach but to relocate the existing one to preserve the option of separate bathing while reopening the Nordau beach area to the general public by removing the current separation barrier and restoring the continuity of the city promenade. The proposed site lies just north of the northern Cliff Beach, near the municipal boundary with Herzliya, continuing the separate beach already operating there.

City officials emphasize that the plan is still under review and coordination with Herzliya authorities, including considerations of the beach's size. They reject claims that the northern Cliff Beach itself will become segregated and stress the goal of expanding open beach access in central Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, opponents vow to continue their campaign, asserting that the fight to keep the northern shoreline open to all is just beginning.
