Israeli Tech Expert Develops AI System to Ensure Accurate Jewish Legal Rulings

Amid growing concerns about inaccuracies in halachic rulings generated by artificial intelligence, Israeli technology expert Asaf Lecht has introduced a groundbreaking AI system that ensures precise Jewish legal answers. The system is based on the rulings of Rabbi Yehoshua Inbal and uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology to prevent AI from fabricating or hallucinating halachic decisions. Lecht explained in an interview with Kikar HaShabbat that while many AI language models often provide incorrect or invented rulings, his system strictly retrieves answers from a verified and controlled database of traditional Jewish texts, guaranteeing halachic accuracy.

The AI does not generate free-form answers but instead scans authorized sources and presents responses exactly as written by recognized rabbinic authorities. If a question falls outside the database, the system explicitly notifies users that no source is available, thus avoiding misinformation. Rabbi Yehoshua Inbal has endorsed the project enthusiastically, appreciating the accessibility it offers to Jewish law for anyone, anytime.

Following the success of this halachic Q&A system, Lecht is now working on applying similar technology to the study of the Talmud and the Daf Yomi daily page. He acknowledges the complexity of Talmudic texts but sees enormous potential in making deep Talmudic learning accessible to all levels of learners through AI.

Addressing concerns that AI might reduce traditional Torah study efforts, Lecht argues that technology can actually enhance Torah learning and bring it to a much wider audience than ever before. He emphasizes that AI is a tool to increase wisdom and knowledge in Israel and will never replace the human labor of Torah study or the exclusive authority of rabbis and halachic decisors.
