“Like a Locust Plague”: Thousands of Mosquitoes Swarm Shocked Tourists
Massive swarms of mosquitoes have taken over Lake Shchuchye in Russia, preventing tourists from reaching the area. A viral video shows the alarming scene.
The disturbing footage, which spread on social media, shows thousands of mosquitoes overrunning the tourist site of Lake Shchuchye in the Buryatia region of Russia. Tourists who came to enjoy the scenery were forced to flee to their cars and stay inside after the swarms covered the air and the ground in such huge numbers that they could not reach the lake at all.
One user wrote that “the mosquito swarms are preventing people from getting out of their cars,” while another added, “There are a lot of mosquitoes everywhere this year, but I’ve never seen anything like this.” Another user described the sight as “horrible, like a locust plague.” Insect experts estimated that the unusual mosquito activity would continue at least until next week.
It should be noted that this is not the first time such a phenomenon has occurred in Russia. In 2021, millions of mosquitoes were documented over the Kamchatka Peninsula, near the Bering Sea in the North Pacific Ocean.
