PayBox Data Reveals Surge in Group Creation Ahead of Israeli School Year
As the Israeli school year approaches on September 1, PayBox reports a significant increase in the creation of new groups on its platform, reflecting changing social and parental behaviors. While normally a new PayBox group is created every 46 seconds in Israel, last September saw this rate accelerate to one new group every 9 seconds, about five times the usual pace. This surge is largely driven by parents organizing for the school year, including WhatsApp groups with and without teachers, as well as PayBox groups for various purposes.
According to PayBox data, 21% of new groups serve as parent committees, 23% are for special events, and 22% are for collecting money for gifts. Other uses include joint purchases (5%), donations (5%), and miscellaneous purposes (24%). Women initiate 76% of these groups, likely correlating with the high number of parent committee and gift-related groups. The most active group manager oversees over 2,000 groups, and the largest single fundraising effort collected 746,000 shekels.
Since October 7, PayBox has observed a dramatic 570% increase in funds raised through donation groups. The largest group formed during this period had 5,055 members and was created to raise money for a family who lost their son in the Nova disaster. Alongside these statistics, PayBox announced new service enhancements, including removing the PayBox card limit to allow transfers of up to 10,000 shekels per month per card, enabling group management transfers without creating new groups, adding an admin question during payments, clearer payment confirmations, and a consolidated dashboard for all groups and balances.
