Experts Debunk Rice and Bananas as Best Cure for Stomach Upset
For years, the traditional remedy for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea has been a bland diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and prunes. However, recent insights reveal this approach is more myth than medically proven solution. Scientific studies supporting this limited diet are scarce, and medical organizations no longer recommend it as the best treatment for gastrointestinal illness.
The main drawback of this restrictive diet is its lack of essential nutrients. It includes only four foods and fails to provide adequate protein, fiber, calcium, or vitamin B12, all vital for intestinal cell regeneration. While bananas and apples contain soluble fiber that helps absorb fluids and stabilize stools, and white rice offers resistant starch with bananas supplying potassium lost during vomiting, these benefits do not justify prolonged dietary limitation.
Experts advise not to follow this diet for more than 24 hours, especially in children recovering from stomach ailments. Instead, a broader range of easily digestible foods is encouraged, such as clear broths, oatmeal, boiled potatoes, and salted crackers, which offer variety without stressing the stomach. As symptoms improve, gradually reintroducing nutritious foods like scrambled eggs, cooked vegetables, and skinless chicken is recommended.
Patients should avoid acidic foods, alcohol, caffeine, dairy, sugar, and fried or spicy dishes, as these can further irritate the digestive system. The primary focus during illness should be maintaining hydration through water, herbal teas, clear broths, and electrolyte drinks to support recovery.
