Rabbanit Sarah Israelzon Was First Female Draft Resister in Israel’s History

At a condolence gathering for the passing of Rabbanit Sarah Israelzon, Rabbi David Elishiv shared a remarkable story about his sister that had never been revealed before. Approximately 75 years ago, when the Israeli draft was first extended to young women, Rabbanit Israelzon was the first to be arrested for draft evasion. She was detained at her home and spent half a day in custody after drinking coffee.

Rabbi Elishiv explained that thanks to close connections with the then Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, who had studied with his father, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elishiv, and the efforts of their grandfather, the righteous Rabbi Aryeh Levin, known as the 'Father of Prisoners,' she was released to return home. Rabbi Elishiv expressed hope that, with God’s help, she would also be the last to face such arrest for draft evasion.
