Education Minister Yoav Kish Skips Key Back-to-School Conferences for Cyprus Vacation Amid Teacher Shortage
With just two weeks remaining before the start of the school year, Israel's education system continues to face a severe shortage of teachers and teaching assistants. During this critical period, Education Minister Yoav Kish traveled to Cyprus for a vacation, missing several important preparatory conferences ahead of the new academic year. Due to the Likud primaries, Kish missed a crucial conference organized by the Haredi district and was absent from three additional meetings this week, totaling four missed events. Ministry sources described the minister's two-week absence during this pivotal time as "unprecedented."
Meanwhile, a recent survey conducted by the State Education Watchdog through Midgam Institute evaluated Kish's performance at the end of his term. The results showed that 66% of respondents rated him poorly. Dissatisfaction was particularly pronounced in the state education sector, with about 78% giving negative feedback, while the state-religious sector showed a narrower majority of 52% disapproval. In contrast, the Haredi community expressed relatively high satisfaction, with 47% approval of Kish's performance. Itamar Kramer, director of the State Education Watchdog, commented that the only group satisfied with Kish is the Haredi sector, reflecting troubling priorities. Kramer criticized Kish for favoring private networks and sectoral policies over addressing teacher shortages and restoring public trust in state education.
Separately, it was revealed that the Ministry of Education is considering introducing a new matriculation exam in heritage studies as part of Kish's education reform plan. Currently, the "For Me Heritage" course is taught in elementary schools, replacing homeland and geography lessons. Kish has instructed officials to explore adding this subject to high school curricula with a two-unit matriculation exam, potentially starting as early as next year despite the tight timeline. This initiative was first reported by Channel 13 news last week and confirmed in a recent ministry meeting.
