Atalanta Coach Maurizio Sarri Praises Hapoel Tel Aviv's Physical Edge After 0-0 Draw
Maurizio Sarri, head coach of Atalanta, expressed respect for Hapoel Tel Aviv following their 0-0 draw in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League playoff on August 20 in Bergamo. Sarri acknowledged that Hapoel Tel Aviv appeared physically superior and more dynamic during the match, stating they seemed to be at a more advanced stage in their preparation. He noted that although Hapoel showed signs of fatigue in the final 15 minutes, their overall performance was strong and challenging for Atalanta.
Sarri emphasized the difficulty of the upcoming second leg in Tel Aviv, saying Atalanta must travel there aiming for a win. He admitted the team lacked effectiveness in the final 20 meters of the pitch and could have done more offensively. Sarri also highlighted that Atalanta is still in a rebuilding phase, with nine players recently participating in the World Cup and four currently injured. He expressed mixed feelings about the match, satisfied with some aspects but recognizing the need for significant improvement.
The match marked the beginning of Sarri's tenure as Atalanta's coach, setting a cautious tone for the team's progress in European competition. The second leg will determine which team advances further in the Conference League playoffs.
