Human Rights Group Condemns Israeli Arrest and Treatment of Palestinian Doctor from Ramallah
Dr. Dima Amin, a 55-year-old physician from Ramallah, was arrested at her home by Israeli forces on Tuesday morning due to over 100 Facebook posts suspected of incitement, security offenses, and support for a hostile organization. The arrest involved a violent break-in, including door destruction and property damage, according to her family and neighbors. After her detention, her whereabouts were unknown for approximately 30 hours. During this time, Dr. Amin suffered a cardiac event and was hospitalized in Jerusalem, where she underwent angioplasty. Despite her medical condition, a military court in Ofer extended her detention by five days, citing reasonable suspicion against her. She is currently held at the Russian Compound detention center in Jerusalem.
Her lawyer reported that Dr. Amin was tightly handcuffed during transfer and hospitalization, with visible marks on her wrists. The human rights organization B'Tselem criticized the case as part of a broader pattern of systematic abuse against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons since October 2023. B'Tselem documented physical violence, humiliation, denial of medical care, and inhumane living conditions, with at least 90 Palestinian detainees dying during this period. Currently, over 9,300 Palestinians are held in Israeli detention under these harsh conditions.
B'Tselem CEO Yuli Novak stated that Dr. Amin's case exemplifies the cruelty of the system, highlighting how a middle-aged female doctor was subjected to harsh treatment and continued detention despite serious health issues. Novak condemned the policy as one that instills fear among the civilian population and normalizes torture and abuse. The case has drawn attention to the ongoing human rights concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody.
