Gush Etzion Council Evicts Talmud Torah at Night, Leaving 100 Children Without Classrooms
A major controversy erupted in Gush Etzion after the regional council forcibly removed the Talmud Torah's educational equipment late at night, leaving about 100 students without a permanent learning space. The evacuation occurred despite the start of the new school year, sparking outrage among parents who condemned the council's actions as harsh and uncooperative. According to the Talmud Torah administration, the council had allocated the space only temporarily and removed the equipment without providing a suitable alternative.
The eviction took place after a tense meeting at 7 p.m. where the council issued eviction threats. Later that night, after the school manager left the premises, council officials arrived and cleared out the classrooms, leaving the students to find empty rooms the next morning. The administration accused the council of acting covertly and ignoring numerous alternative location proposals, including one in Bat Ayin, which local residents opposed due to concerns about affecting their own school.
The Gush Etzion Regional Council responded sharply, emphasizing that the Talmud Torah is a "private exempt institution" and that responsibility for securing a permanent facility lies with the school's managing association. The council stated it had only allocated the premises for one year (the 2022-2023 school year) and had offered a four-dunam plot in another settlement in April, which the school declined. The council also noted that the removed equipment was stored in a dedicated container and reiterated its willingness to assist in finding a location for the upcoming school year.
As a result, the roughly 100 students face educational uncertainty while both sides continue to blame each other for the crisis. The dispute highlights tensions between local authorities and private religious educational institutions over facility responsibilities and community cooperation in Gush Etzion.
