Shas Leader Aryeh Deri Delivers Letter to Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef Amid Party Tensions

Amid rising tensions within the Shas party leadership, Shas chairman Aryeh Deri visited Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, to deliver a personal letter from Rabbi Moshe Maya, the senior member of the Council of Torah Sages. The letter emphasized Shas's commitment to preserving the legacy of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the party's spiritual founder, and called on Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef to assume guidance over the party and its institutions in line with his father's heritage.

Rabbi Maya's letter highlighted that Rabbi Ovadia Yosef entrusted Aryeh Deri with public affairs, describing him as a "faithful steward" leading the party through its current challenges. Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, in response, stressed the "duty of the hour" to act for the benefit of Torah scholars and yeshiva students, key elements of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's legacy.

This initiative comes just before Shas's election campaign launch, aiming to present a united spiritual front around Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's heritage while reinforcing Deri's leadership of the political movement. The move seeks to quell internal disputes and consolidate support within the party's religious and political ranks.
