US Army Offers Extra Leave for Soldiers to Play GTA 6 as Reenlistment Incentive
The US Army has introduced an unusual incentive at Fort Stewart, Georgia, offering soldiers who reenlist a special four-day leave to coincide with the release of the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). This benefit is exclusive to the 9th Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division and requires soldiers to commit to extending their service by at least two years, up to six years. Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko, the unit spokesperson, explained that the program aims to connect with soldiers' interests and motivate them to reenlist.
Currently, 20 out of 130 eligible soldiers in the battalion have opted for this incentive. If successful, the program may expand to other units within the US Army. The initiative reflects the military's ongoing efforts to attract and retain personnel by offering unique benefits beyond traditional incentives like tuition assistance or specialized training.
The US Army has previously targeted gamers by recruiting at gaming conventions and establishing an esports team focused on popular titles such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, and League of Legends. The excitement surrounding GTA 6, set for release on November 19, 2024, in a fictional version of Miami and featuring the series' first female protagonist, inspired the battalion's leadership to include the game in their reenlistment perks.
The Army's memo states that soldiers reenlisting between August 1 and November 14, 2026, will be eligible for the special leave timed with the game's launch. This approach highlights the military's adaptive recruitment strategies to appeal to younger demographics and non-traditional candidates. Observers note the contrast with Israeli military retention methods, pondering whether similar niche incentives might emerge in the future.
