Turkey's Consulate Conducts Illegal Construction in Jerusalem Amid Israeli Inaction
Despite strained diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkey, Ankara's presence in Jerusalem is reportedly growing through illegal construction activities. The Turkish consulate in Jerusalem, operating in close cooperation with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, is accused of violating building laws and preventing Israeli inspectors from accessing the site. This situation has raised concerns about Israeli sovereignty and security, as the consulate allegedly supports Hamas through these actions.
A study by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs revealed these violations, prompting former Jerusalem City Council member Yair Gabay to call on the municipality to intervene. Gabay condemned the consulate's actions as a blatant disregard for Israeli sovereignty in East Jerusalem and urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to shut down the Turkish consulate.
Israeli authorities, including the Foreign Ministry and Jerusalem Municipality, have so far refrained from taking enforcement action. The municipality stated that enforcement requires coordination with external bodies and has not yet begun due to lack of response. The Jerusalem Police noted no official complaint has been filed by the municipality and emphasized their commitment to enforcing demolition orders related to sovereignty and law enforcement.
Currently, the Turkish consulate continues its operations and illegal construction in Jerusalem, with no formal Israeli enforcement measures initiated. The report suggests hope that public exposure might accelerate official responses to the issue.
