Gilad Erdan Advocates Torah Scholars’ Exemptions Amid Complex Haredi Draft Debate
Gilad Erdan, chairman of the new 'Unity' party, detailed his political path and views in an extensive interview with Yishai Cohen on Kikar HaShabbat. Erdan explained his departure from Likud, criticizing its internal dynamics and influence by interest groups, and emphasized his refusal to join a narrow government coalition, even if it means new elections.
Central to the interview was Erdan’s nuanced stance on the Haredi draft issue. He firmly opposes extreme sanctions like arrests or voting rights revocation against draft refusers but supports universal service obligations, including military, civilian, or national service. He advocates for draft deferrals for exceptional Torah scholars, arguing that rabbis should decide who qualifies, and stresses the need for appropriate military infrastructure respecting Haredi lifestyles.
Erdan called on Haredi leadership to adopt a constructive approach toward enlistment, suggesting a gradual integration of core curriculum studies and transforming Haredi schools into officially recognized state-religious institutions. He rejected the so-called Edelstein draft plan and insisted on moral principles that cannot be compromised. Regarding political alliances, Erdan ruled out cooperation with parties supporting narrow left-wing-led coalitions or Arab parties that do not condemn Hamas.
He also addressed the upcoming elections, expressing confidence that his party will gain traction despite current polling challenges. Erdan said he would demand generous unity proposals from leading parties and hold any party refusing cooperation responsible for forcing new elections. He underscored that a narrow government would be disastrous for Israel and called for broad unity to tackle judicial reform, cost of living, and national service issues.
Erdan’s positions reflect a balancing act between upholding Haredi religious values and ensuring equal civic duties, aiming to foster national unity and sustainable governance.
