Zeev Elkin Responds to Likud Primaries Results, Calls Outcome Disappointing

Likud Minister Zeev Elkin addressed the results of the party's recent primaries on Wednesday, where he was ranked 32nd on the list, a position he described as unrealistic and disappointing. Elkin clarified that he had agreed a year and a half ago to give the reserved slot to Gideon Sa'ar, allowing Sa'ar to focus fully on his role as Foreign Minister during a challenging diplomatic period. He emphasized that this decision was made collectively and was in Israel's national interest, expressing full support and appreciation for Sa'ar's friendship and assistance during the primaries.

Elkin revealed he received nearly 23,000 votes, placing him 17th on the national list, ahead of several incumbent ministers and just 239 votes shy of 16th place. He noted that due to the party's rules ensuring female representation and other factors, his official placement dropped to 32nd, which he respects despite his disappointment. He expressed pride in his results and gratitude to the voters and supporters who helped him achieve this outcome.

He reiterated his commitment to working hard for Likud's victory in the upcoming elections, regardless of his position on the list, stressing the importance of continuing the party's active security policies. Elkin also addressed questions about his decision to join the government and return to Likud, stating he does not regret it and chose ideological conviction over guaranteed political safety. He credited his faction's participation with stabilizing the right-wing government, enabling it to conduct two significant wars against Iran, establish security zones in Syria and Lebanon, and build over 100 settlements in Judea and Samaria.
