Turkey Condemns Israeli Airstrike Near Its Border, Warns Against War

Turkey's media erupted in anger following Israel's official admission of an airstrike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria, located just 72 kilometers from the Turkish border. Major Turkish newspapers and TV channels in Ankara and Istanbul adopted a confrontational tone, rejecting Israel's justifications and accusing it of provocation. National security expert Mete Yeter expressed fierce anger on live television, directly challenging Jerusalem with the words, "If you have courage, let's fight, Israel!"

Turkish headlines labeled the strike a "serious provocation" and claimed "the Zionists' problem is Turkey." Analysts questioned the timing of the attack and Israel's admission, noting it came shortly before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's planned visit to Syria. Senior commentators suggested Israel feared Turkish troops arriving at the base and aimed to disrupt Ankara-Damascus coordination efforts. Turkish media also highlighted Erdoğan's statement to Al Jazeera a day before the strike, declaring, "We talk about peace, but if there is aggression, we will not shy away from war."

Israel took responsibility for the unusual strike near the Turkish border, with the Prime Minister's Office stating in English that Israel had repeatedly warned it would not tolerate threats to its security. According to Netanyahu's office, Israel and Syria had agreed to maintain a security status quo, which Syria violated by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at the airbase near Aleppo. Israel warned Syria that such deployment posed a security threat, but Syria ignored these warnings. The strike targeted runways and hangars used for parking aircraft, shortly after a Turkish delegation visited the site last week. Israel emphasized it would welcome a return to the previous security arrangements.
