Itamar Ben-Gvir Blocks Senior Appointment in Israel's Lahav 433 Without Explanation
Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's National Security Minister, has once again faced legal challenges after delaying the appointment of Senior Superintendent Itzik Alfasi as spokesperson for the Investigations and Intelligence Division of Lahav 433. Alfasi petitioned the court following Ben-Gvir's refusal to approve his appointment despite Alfasi being selected through the official placement process and receiving recommendations from the police commissioner and senior command staff.
The petition argues that Ben-Gvir's refusal lacked proper administrative procedure and failed to provide professional justifications for deviating from the police's recommendations. Alfasi claims the circumstances raise serious concerns that Ben-Gvir's decision was influenced by improper considerations. In July, deputy legal advisors to the government warned Ben-Gvir that withholding appointments in sensitive units could undermine the independence of law enforcement.
Alfasi is requesting the court to intervene and order the completion of his appointment process. He stresses that the discrepancy between the professional recommendations and the minister's conduct, combined with the absence of reasoning, warrants judicial review and poses a threat to police independence and the professional discretion of its commanders. Police Commissioner Danni Levi is also involved in the matter, underscoring the significance of the dispute within Israel's security apparatus.
