Romario Sparks Live Broadcast Controversy After Brazil’s Draw With Morocco
A live exchange between Brazilian football legend Romario and journalist Fernanda Gentil has become one of the hottest talking points in Brazil after Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco in the opening round of Group C at the 2026 World Cup. The former striker, now 60, was commenting alongside Gentil on CazéTV when the argument broke out.
After Gentil asked whether the result left him disappointed or feeling like a loser, Romario replied bluntly that a first-game draw against Morocco was not a defeat and that anyone who felt that way “does not understand much about football.” He added, “Whoever does not know much about football will think the way you think. And we are Brazilians.” Romario, a former Barcelona and Brazil star who won the 1994 World Cup with the Seleção, then said Morocco had played “better, more technical and more organized football,” while noting that Brazil still has better players but that World Cup openers are different. Gentil cut him off to move to another interview in the broadcast.
The clip quickly spread online and triggered debate over whether the interruption was a production issue or a reaction to Romario’s tone. Some viewers accused him of being condescending and sexist, and one outlet said he had “humiliated” her live on air.
Others defended Romario, arguing that he was trying to stress Morocco’s quality. They pointed to Morocco’s fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup, its Africa Cup of Nations title, and the presence of several players from the squad that won the Under-20 World Cup after beating Argentina in the final.
